The International Monetary Fund is sounding an explicit alarm on artificial intelligence valuations, warning that high leverage and circular financing structures among market leaders now pose a systemic threat to global credit and sovereign debt stability. According to reporting from The Guardian and Unite.AI on the latest Global Financial Stability Report, the fund highlighted that tech hyperscalers now account for 10% of global investment-grade bond issuance, up sharply from under 1% in 2024. With megacap tech firms representing over 35% of the S&P 500, the IMF estimated that an adverse unwinding scenario could shave up to 0.4% off global GDP by 2028.
This leverage vulnerability lands squarely on an equity structure that is already splintering underneath the surface. While the broader market maintains a calm posture with SPY spot at 778.14 sitting above its 776.41 gamma flip, the tech-heavy complex is absorbing real structural pressure. QQQ spot trades at 742.62, anchored deeply in short gamma territory well below its flip at 752.17.
When a major benchmark slips beneath its flip into short gamma, the dealer book stops serving as a cushion. In positive gamma, dealers counter the prevailing direction by buying dips and selling rips. Below the flip, that mechanical mandate reverses. Dealers are forced to sell into weakness and buy into strength to keep their books delta-neutral, actively accelerating tape velocity instead of smoothing it out.
For tech, that leaves the tape acutely vulnerable to outside shocks. QQQ is pinned just two points above its primary 740 put wall, with an expected move of plus or minus 0.92% and an elevated skew of 2. If the IMF's warning triggers a fresh wave of derisking in chipmakers or cloud operators, the downside vacuum toward 740 has little dealer resistance to arrest it. The broader market may look orderly, but tech dealers are hedged to press whatever move breaks first.
