Tech Holds Long Gamma as Small Caps Pin Their Put Wall

QQQ kept dealers in shock-absorber mode while SPY and IWM closed under their flips into quarter-end.

The final session of the quarter split the equity complex right down the dealer line. Tech held its ground while broader equities drifted, perfectly matching the gamma divide across the books. The wire spent the afternoon tracking corporate moves, with Reuters reporting that Google announced its Gemini 4 AI model and Bloomberg detailing Amazon's 20-year nuclear power agreement with Constellation. That AI narrative provided enough bid to keep the Nasdaq buoyant, with front-month futures finishing up 0.41% at 30,739. On my map, QQQ was the lone index asset operating with dealers as a buffer. Spot closed at 740.99, sitting safely above its 739.10 flip. When spot holds above that mark, dealers sit in long gamma, buying intraday weakness and selling strength to keep the tape contained. With the call wall overhead at 745 and the put wall at 730, tech stayed well within its ±1.43% expected move. SPY told a very different story. Spot finished at 763.29, down 0.11% on our tape, remaining trapped below its 767.38 gamma flip. That keeps dealers in short gamma, where their hedging activity accelerates price momentum rather than absorbing it. Despite that slicker tape, downside was checked just above the 760 put wall, leaving SPY's daily move narrow against its ±0.93% expected band. VIX ticked up 1.87% to close at 16.34, reflecting the slight premium demanded when the headline index cannot clear its zero-gamma line. IWM absorbed the brunt of the dealer pressure. Spot closed at 278.10, pinned directly against its 278 put wall after spending the day deep below its 282.24 flip. Skew finished elevated at 1.8. When dealers are short gamma and price tests a major wall into the close, that level acts as the final floor; if it gives way tomorrow, hedging flows provide zero padding down to the next pocket of liquidity. Across the digital asset book, Benzinga reported muted trading across major tokens heading into the quarterly close. Bitcoin traded flat at $83,709, sitting beneath its $84,595 flip in short dealer gamma. That keeps the crypto tape reactive to directional flow, though major pain remains near $84,500. Entering tomorrow, QQQ retains its shock absorber while SPY and IWM trade without one.
