SPY Slips into Short Gamma Below 766.93

Yield headlines cheered the broad market, but equity dealers sit short gamma across the board while crypto absorbs deep positive positioning.

TipRanks reported that SPY and QQQ gained as rate hike odds tumbled and Treasury yields slipped, with the 10-year note sliding 1.06% to 5.24%. That is the narrative crossing the financial tape, but underneath the index rally, the equity options market tells a far more constrained story. I measure SPY at 764.19, which places spot cleanly below its gamma flip at 766.93. Despite the green headline numbers, dealers remain short gamma on the index. In short gamma, dealers act as an accelerant rather than a shock absorber, pressing moves rather than dampening them. SPY is boxed between its 760 put wall and its 770 call wall, facing an expected move of plus or minus 1.08% with skew at 1. The rally did not flip the regime; it merely carried price closer to the zero-gamma line where defense ends. QQQ reflects the same tension. With spot at 742.67, tech sits just beneath its gamma flip at 742.88. Dealers are short gamma there too, bracketed by a 730 put wall and a 745 call wall, while pricing an expected move of plus or minus 1.39% with skew at 1.8. IWM sits even deeper beneath its threshold: spot at 279.49 against a flip at 281.9, holding just above its 278 put wall while facing an expected move of plus or minus 1.66%. Across the crypto desk, the structure inverts entirely. Benzinga reported that Bitcoin stayed rangebound as rising yields tested alternative assets, but the dealer book shows thick padding. I measure BTC spot at 84703.90, sitting miles above its gamma flip at 67618.26 with net GEX positive at 53.9 million. ETH mirrors that cushion: spot at 2700.16 against a flip at 2688.78 with positive net GEX above 5.08 million. While equity dealers are forced to chase intraday drift in negative gamma, the crypto majors sit in positive regimes where dealer hedging absorbs volatility. The macro wire is celebrating rate relief, but the dealer maps reveal fragile scaffolding across equities. If SPY cannot reclaim 766.93, every dip is subject to structural selling from desk delta hedging. How you trade that tape is your click, but the book is what dictates the friction.
