Bitcoin Stalls Under Its 84,222 Gamma Flip
A soft-inflation pop fades as dealers stay short gamma across BTC and ETH, amplifying moves beneath their key structural lines.

The wire brought another round of macro optimism overnight, but the dealer book is telling a much colder story. Reuters reported that Citi raised its forecasts for bitcoin and ether on strong activity across the sector, while Benzinga reported key Republicans are backing a new bill for clearer crypto tax rules. Earlier in the session, CoinDesk noted that bitcoin's soft-inflation pop up toward 85,500 faded rapidly as Treasury yields refused to fall, with the 10-year yield printing 5.29%.
My read on the options map shows why that push ran out of gas so quickly. On my tape, BTC trades at 83,385, pinned cleanly beneath its gamma flip at 84,222. With net GEX sitting at -8,002,240, dealers are operating in negative gamma territory. In short gamma, dealers are no longer the market's shock absorber. Instead of selling strength and buying dips, they hedge by selling into weakness and buying into breakouts, expanding the intraday range. As long as BTC sits beneath 84,222, that hedging flow adds friction to any sustained recovery.
ETH is mirroring the exact same posture. Trading at 2,678 against its 2,715 flip, ETH holds net GEX of -4,774,361. CoinDesk reported an earlier security incident at MetaMask that prompted validator staking exits, though no user funds were compromised. The structural reality is that ETH dealers are short gamma beneath 2,715, leaving spot vulnerable to amplified swings until that line is cleared. Max pain sits lower at 2,650, offering a gravitational pull into daily settlement.
Across the rest of the majors, positioning remains fractured. SOL sits at 117.47, also below its flip of 119.29 with negative net GEX of -117,687. AVAX and XRP, by contrast, are holding above their respective flips at 10.96 and 1.44 with positive net GEX, providing localized cushions where dealers lean against moves rather than pressing them.
The equity desk provides a telling cross-read into the New York open. SPY trades at 763.26, sitting in short gamma below its 766.85 flip with its put wall down at 760. When both index equities and crypto majors sit in negative dealer gamma at the same time, volatility spreads easily across both books. The wire reports the narratives, but the levels tell you who is forced to hedge.
