Lucid slashed its vehicle production forecast by 38% after missing quarterly delivery estimates, Benzinga reported on Monday, compounding headwinds across the electric vehicle space despite broader morning tailwinds across index futures.
While headline writers focus on single-stock production woes and morning rallies in mega-cap semiconductor names, the index tape underneath shows a clear mechanical split. SPY is holding firmly in long gamma territory at 778.09, well above its 765.84 gamma flip, with dealers positioned to pad swings between the 772 put wall and the 780 call wall. Small caps on IWM are mirroring that cushion, sitting at 284.71 against a 282.45 flip.
Tech, however, has parted company with that buffer. QQQ sits at 760.52, trading below its 764.16 gamma flip. That puts tech dealers in short gamma, where their mechanical hedging mandate changes completely. Instead of absorbing moves by selling into rips and buying into dips, short gamma forces dealers to sell weakness and buy strength, accelerating intraday velocity rather than dampening it. With QQQ pinned between its 749 put wall and a 762 call wall overhead, rallies face supply while breaks lower lack the natural stabilizer seen in the broader S&P.
Over in crypto, Bitcoin is holding stable ground around $86,190, resting above its $85,455 gamma flip with positive net GEX across major books. Like SPY, Bitcoin's dealer positioning remains structured to absorb flow rather than chase it.
The equity divergence leaves the market running on two separate gears. Broad equity indices are backstopped by dealer long gamma, but the tech complex driving names like Lucid and broader momentum is navigating negative gamma terrain. When dealers sit short gamma on the Nasdaq, clean headlines rarely translate to calm sessions.
