QQQ Opens Session Trapped in Short Gamma Below 763.98
Tech futures rally on falling yields, but dealer short gamma below 763.98 threatens wider morning swings.

Falling oil and softening yields gave equity futures an early lift, with investor desks leaning into morning rallies across chipmakers and mega-cap tech. Investor's Business Daily reported that the Dow pointed 300 points higher as crude and bond yields pulled back, while Benzinga noted shifting rate expectations as market-implied odds of an October Fed hike fell to 21.6%. Yet beneath the green tape on the screens, the options structure tells a split story.
While SPY enters the bell with dealers positioned in long gamma at spot 777.92, comfortably above its 765.95 flip, QQQ sits on the wrong side of its dealer cushion. At spot 760.37, QQQ trades below its gamma flip of 763.98, locking dealers into short gamma positioning. In short gamma, dealers hedge by selling into declines and buying into rallies, amplifying moves rather than dampening them. That makes any opening headline punchier than the broader tape suggests.
QQQ's nearest ceiling is its 762 call wall, right below that 763.98 transition line. If cash tech fails to push through that band, the downside pocket stretches toward the 749 put wall, against an expected move of plus or minus 0.93%. SPY faces a much calmer posture, backed by positive dealer gamma between a 772 put wall and a 780 call wall, against an expected move of plus or minus 1.11%.
Small caps match the broader index's insulation. IWM trades at 284.58 in long gamma territory above its 282.36 flip, bounded by the 282 put wall and 286 call wall with an expected move of plus or minus 1.08%.
In crypto, majors show similar structural divergences. Bitcoin trades at 86,190 with positive net gamma and spot holding above its 85,455 flip, anchored against an 86,000 max pain level. Ethereum sits at 2,713.83, also above its 2,695.20 flip with positive net gamma. Meanwhile, XRP trades at 1.509 with negative net gamma below its 1.537 flip line, leaving its book thinner into any sharp liquidity sweep.
