Shares of the major United States wireless carriers took an immediate hit today as SpaceX unveiled formal plans to enter the commercial cellular space. AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile all tumbled more than 7% across the session after Elon Musk’s aerospace firm outlined an expansion to transform Starlink into a direct-to-cell nationwide mobile network.
The selloff followed reporting by The Wall Street Journal that SpaceX reached a deal to acquire cellular spectrum from Grain Management. Cointelegraph and Watcher Guru noted the company plans to pair that terrestrial spectrum directly with its low-Earth-orbit satellite constellation to deliver complete mobile coverage across the country. The transaction remains subject to approval by the Federal Communications Commission.
The sudden prospect of a satellite-backed entrant unnerved an industry already burdened by heavy capital expenditure cycles. The legacy carriers have operated as an established oligopoly, relying on billions of dollars in fiber and tower buildouts to defend their subscriber bases. An operating orbital carrier backed by SpaceX’s launch cadence represents a structural shift in how cellular coverage can be delivered without ground towers.
The news hit public equity markets during an already fragile session for broad risk appetite. The Nasdaq futures sank 1.11% to 31,053, while S&P 500 futures slid 0.34% to 7,826. In our equity dealer book, QQQ sits at 749.19, trapped well below its gamma flip at 756.11 in short gamma territory where dealers amplify directional selling. While the broader tech selloff also digested a reported $20 billion revenue outlook cut at OpenAI, the telecom slump was entirely concentrated around the Starlink direct threat.
The regulatory process remains the next operational hurdle. The FCC must formally review the spectrum transfer from Grain Management before SpaceX can deploy commercial service on those bands. Until the agency issues its ruling, the wireless sector faces a new competitor capable of bypassing ground-based infrastructure entirely.
