Super Micro Contractor Pleads Guilty in $2.5B Chip Case

A guilty plea over smuggled Nvidia artificial intelligence hardware lands as tech options dealer positioning slips into negative gamma.

Federal prosecutors secured a guilty plea from a Super Micro Computer contractor in connection with an illicit $2.5 billion export scheme involving advanced Nvidia artificial intelligence chips bound for China, Benzinga reported early Saturday morning. The case centers on unauthorized diversions of enterprise-grade data center accelerators, highlighting escalating enforcement friction around semiconductor trade restrictions just as enterprise hardware valuations face heightened scrutiny. Benzinga noted the scheme diverted hardware valued in the billions, marking one of the largest export control breaches prosecuted to date involving top-tier graphic processing units. While hardware headlines add friction across the supply chain, the immediate impact on equity structure is visible in the options books. The tech-heavy tape is navigating this tape without dealer padding. On QQQ, spot sits at 751.37, hovering below its 752.10 gamma flip line. That puts dealers in short gamma territory, positioned just above the 750.00 put wall with the call wall overhead at 755.00. When spot slips below the zero-gamma flip, dealer hedging mechanics invert. Instead of absorbing intraday volatility by buying into dips and selling rips, dealers are compelled to hedge in the direction of underlying momentum. That structural dynamic expands realized moves, with QQQ pricing an intraday expected move of plus or minus 0.56% alongside an elevated skew reading of 0.9. Broader equities show a clear bifurcation. SPY remains stabilized in positive gamma at 778.60, cushioned above its 776.25 flip line and bounded tightly by the 780.00 call wall. Small caps on IWM trade at 279.01, maintaining a position above their 278.38 flip. Tech positioning remains the isolated soft spot across major indexes, where negative gamma leaves the tape exposed to amplified headlines. What traders choose to do with that structural split remains their own click.
