British Maritime Authority Reports Strait of Hormuz Tanker Strike

A vessel sustained damage from an unknown projectile in the critical crude transit choke point while global equity books sit split across gamma regimes.

A commercial tanker took damage from an unknown projectile while navigating the Strait of Hormuz, according to a flash bulletin from the British maritime authority reported by FirstSquawk. The authority confirmed the crew is safe, but the strike marks an immediate escalation across the primary chokepoint through which roughly a fifth of global petroleum consumption flows. The strike lands directly on an energy complex already strained by regional disruptions. Reporting from Reuters and Bloomberg previously noted Brent crude stabilizing around $104 per barrel with WTI near $91.50, alongside an influx of over 300,000 tons of Russian diesel following recent negotiations. Now, fresh physical risk in the Persian Gulf threatens to re-widen geopolitical risk premia across transport, industrial inputs, and energy supply chains that headline inflation figures continue to digest. Over on our equity options desk, the indices enter this geopolitical headline with fractured underlying mechanics. The tech complex sits defensively vulnerable: QQQ trades at 751.37, lingering underneath its gamma flip at 752.10. That places tech dealers in short gamma territory, bound between a 750 put wall and a 755 call wall with an expected move of plus or minus 0.56%. Under short gamma regimes, market makers do not cushion moves by buying dips; they are forced to sell into market weakness and buy into momentum, accelerating headline reactions. Conversely, broad market positioning elsewhere carries more insulation. SPY prints at 778.60, hovering above its flip line at 776.18 with a 770 put wall and a 780 call wall, while IWM sits at 279.01 above its 278.38 flip. Both SPY and IWM dealers hold long gamma, acting as shock absorbers against rapid spillover unless spot breaks their zero-lines. Meanwhile, the crypto board shows Bitcoin at $83,028 on our live tape, safely operating above its $82,063 flip with deep positive net GEX of 12.2 million. The physical disruption in the Strait will dictate how energy trade settles, but until QQQ reclaims 752.10, tech positioning remains the fragile link on our map.
