Zelensky Says Energy Ceasefire Was News to Him
Ukraine confirmed openness to an energy truce if Russia complies, even after being caught off guard by the White House announcement.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky was caught completely unaware by the White House announcement of an immediate bilateral energy ceasefire. Axios reported on the wire that Zelensky said the truce declaration was entirely news to him. Despite the lack of prior coordination, Axios noted that Zelensky confirmed Ukraine remains ready to agree to an energy pause if Russian forces genuinely halt strikes on infrastructure.
The diplomatic friction arrives just hours after President Trump publicly declared a bilateral halt to energy facility attacks. The sudden policy rollout left Kyiv reacting in real time to terms delivered publicly before they were negotiated privately. Even so, Ukrainian leadership indicated that halting mutual strikes against power grids and refineries remains a workable framework if Moscow actually stops targeting Ukrainian utility nodes.
The confusion on the geopolitical tape lands directly on energy and equity desks trying to price raw supply risk. Earlier, Stan Choe at the Associated Press reported that Brent crude fluctuated between $102.50 and $105.00 before settling around $104.15 per barrel, as persistent supply disruptions and geopolitical headlines keep spot prices elevated. That volatility feeds straight back into index positioning.
On our desk, the equity book reflects a divided tape absorbing the conflicting signals. SPY sits at 778.57, positioned in long gamma above its 776.15 flip, with dealers functioning as a shock absorber between the 770 put wall and the 780 call wall. QQQ is less insulated: spot at 751.27 sits below its 751.99 flip in short gamma, pinned right against its 750 put wall where dealers press intraday moves instead of dampening them. Across crypto majors, Bitcoin trades at 83,050 on our tape, comfortably above its 82,125 flip with positive net gamma providing structural insulation. Until diplomatic terms harden into verifiable action on the ground, headline whiplash leaves broad tech exposed to rapid delta hedging around key boundary lines.
