Sovereign Debt Sell-Off Drives Global Bond Yields Past 4%

Escalating borrowing costs have begun doing the work of central banks, wiping out nearly 200 basis points of projected rate hikes across major advanced economies.

The relentless retreat across global sovereign debt has driven benchmark borrowing costs to multi-decade peaks, tightening financial conditions so abruptly that money markets are aggressively ditching bets on further official policy hikes. According to reporting from Bloomberg News, the 10-year US Treasury yield touched between 5.24% and 5.35%, holding around its highest levels since 2002, while average global government bond yields crossed 4%. Swaps traders responded by paring cumulative rate-hike expectations across eight major economies by nearly 200 basis points since mid-September. Pricing that previously implied 717 basis points of additional cumulative tightening has receded to 539 basis points. This is the classic dynamic where the bond market does the central bank's heavy lifting. When benchmark yields surge on the long end, mortgage rates, corporate credit spreads, and municipal funding costs jump in tandem. That mechanical rise in debt servicing dampens discretionary consumption and halts speculative capital expenditure without central bankers having to vote on a single benchmark increase. The cost, of course, is that the self-tightening transmission mechanism dramatically increases recessionary risk. Energy volatility continues to complicate that macro backdrop. On our own tape, front-month WTI crude futures trade at $93.00, up 1.25% on the session, while Brent futures sit at $106.03. Even as The Associated Press reported tentative developments regarding proposed US purchases of Russian diesel and talk of localized infrastructure ceasefires, persistent high-water marks in crude prevent headline inflation models from cooling fast enough to offer debt markets quick relief. Equity benchmarks reflect that growing unease. Our tape shows VIX climbing 4.51% on the session to 15.51, while Nasdaq futures sit fractionally lower at 31,047. On our equity desk, QQQ has slipped into short gamma territory, with spot at 749.97 trading just under its 750.62 flip. For tech, that positioning profile strips away dealer cushioning, leaving intraday moves prone to widening rather than absorbing shocks as rates remain uncomfortably high.
