Ukraine Naftogaz Says Russia Hit Kharkiv Gas Facilities

Kharkiv gas infrastructure took overnight strikes as crude futures push higher and equity positioning diverges.

Russia attacked Naftogaz gas production facilities in Ukraine's Kharkiv region overnight, FirstSquawk reported, citing an official company statement on the strikes. The fresh hit on Ukrainian energy infrastructure comes alongside broader cross-border friction, directly challenging recent diplomatic claims of an impending pause on utility targeting. Energy markets reacted immediately to the overnight disruption. Front-month Brent futures ticked up 0.81% to trade at $105.57 a barrel, while WTI crude futures pushed up 0.77% to $92.56 a barrel. The supply headline arrives against a fragile geopolitical backdrop, where localized infrastructure hits continue to inject headline risk into physical delivery channels. That underlying energy bump is meeting a split dealer structure across the major equity books this morning. S&P 500 futures sit slightly green at 7,868, up 0.1%, but the underlying index options books are not moving in lockstep. While SPY trades at 779.5 in positive territory above its 769.87 flip, tech positioning shows noticeable friction. QQQ sits at 751.02, pinned just beneath its gamma flip at 751.72. That places QQQ dealers in short gamma territory, positioned right against the 750 put wall with a 755 call wall capping overhead room. In short gamma, dealer hedging works against stability: rather than absorbing intraday chop by buying weakness and selling strength, desk hedging is forced to sell into down moves and buy into rips. That mechanical dynamic leaves tech exposure significantly more vulnerable to sudden headline shocks, particularly as headline-driven energy spikes pressure index components. With front-month VIX advancing 4.38% to 15.49, the equity tape is demanding a broader volatility premium. For index traders navigating intraday moves, the structural dividing line remains clear: as long as QQQ remains trapped under its 751.72 flip, any sudden geopolitical spillover into crude has an accelerator waiting on the desk.
