Capital is fleeing toward liquidity at a pace unseen in four years. Money market funds absorbed a net $166.4 billion in weekly inflows, according to Bank of America and EPFR Global data reported by Charles Schwab. That marks the single largest weekly rush to cash since April 2020 and pushes total global money market fund balances to approximately $8 trillion.
The scramble into risk-free yields came at the direct expense of risk assets. Charles Schwab noted that while ultra-short cash instruments took the lion's share of allocations, bond funds drew $33.8 billion and equity funds captured just $12.4 billion over the same weekly stretch. Investors are taking the message on rates literally: borrowing costs are staying high, and five percent on cash requires neither courage nor patience.
The flight to safety arrives against conflicting signals out of the Federal Reserve over what elevated yields actually signify. Fed Governor Christopher Waller stated that surging Treasury yields are being driven by underlying economic growth and artificial intelligence investments rather than unanchored inflation, Deltaone reported. Yet Chicago Fed President Austan Goolsbee struck a sharper tone on the wires, warning Semafor that the artificial intelligence boom is creating an inflation problem whose price pressures are now spreading well beyond data centers to threaten broader overheating.
That macro rift is showing up across market benchmarks. Ten-year Treasury yields sat at 5.24% on our tape, while the U.S. Dollar Index hovered near 102.28 after retreating from recent peaks. In equities, tech sentiment is wavering under the pressure of prolonged borrowing costs: QQQ closed on our tape at 740.89, pinned below its 742.25 gamma flip in short gamma territory where dealers press moves rather than insulate them. S&P 500 futures slipped 0.08% to 7,852, and Nasdaq-100 futures fell 0.7% to 30,681.
With third-quarter corporate earnings now getting underway, the wall of money sitting in parking accounts sets a high hurdle for equities to clear. When cash yields five percent and central bankers openly debate whether capex is overheating the real economy, eight trillion dollars in money market balances is not temporary caution. It is a structural barricade that equity risk premia must out-earn to draw capital back out.
