QQQ Sinks Beneath Its 758.97 Gamma Flip
Tech positioning tilts defensive as QQQ falls into short gamma well below its flip, leaving dealers to amplify directional selling toward the 740 put wall.

The tech tape is running without shock absorbers. While broader indexes drift quietly, QQQ is trading down at 743.34, sitting deep beneath its gamma flip at 758.97. That positioning gap locks the book into short gamma territory, completely altering how dealers manage underlying flow.
Above the flip, market makers operate as cushions, buying weakness and selling strength to keep the tape pinned. Once spot slips beneath that zero line, their mandate inverts. Hedging requires them to sell into further decline and chase rallies, accelerating intraday swings instead of muting them. With QQQ pinned between a call wall at 750 and a put wall at 740, the path down to structural support has minimal natural defense.
This fracture stands out against the rest of the board. SPY trades at 777.91, securely positioned above its own gamma flip of 774.23 with dealers holding net long gamma between the 777 put wall and 779 call wall. For SPY, every minor dip encounters programmed buying from dealers rebalancing deltas. QQQ enjoys none of that insulation. Its short gamma posture leaves tech uniquely exposed to sudden liquidity vacuums, as evidenced by an expected move of 0.93% compared to just 0.59% on SPY.
Small caps are navigating their own friction. IWM sits at 276.61, also stranded in short gamma below its 278.14 flip, pressing squarely against its 276 put wall. But the real volume disconnect is in the Nasdaq, where the 740 put strike stands as the primary floor before hedging requirements force broader liquidation.
Headlines continue to cycle through artificial intelligence investments and corporate maneuvers. 24/7 Wall St. reported that Amazon wants to pay $7 billion for an AI startup optimizing chip workloads, while Reuters reported Nvidia is buying a minority stake in Doctolib. Yet the dealer books show that thematic tech optimism has not prevented structural fragility from taking over the underlying options ladder.
With QQQ parked over fifteen points below the flip, dealers are positioned to feed volatility rather than swallow it. Until spot reclaims 758.97, any push toward the 740 put wall will be driven by the tape's internal mechanics.
