Tech Drags Equities Late as IWM Remains Trapped Below Gamma Flip

Rising Treasury yields and late-session tech selling pressed equity indexes lower, with IWM staying pinned in short gamma while SPY held above its flip.

Rising Treasury yields and a late-day slide in technology shares dragged broader indexes lower into Wednesday's close. MT Newswires reported that U.S. equity indexes fell in midday trading amid pressure from the rates market, with tech stocks taking a second leg down late in the afternoon. Despite individual catalysts across big tech—including Dan Ives calling Meta's Muse launch a potential game changer in Benzinga reporting and Alphabet expanding its free AI video generation tool in Google Vids—the sector-wide tide pushed price lower across the board. While the headlines focused on tech weakness and Treasury yields, the structural story played out differently depending on where dealers sat relative to their gamma flip. In SPY, price drifted down to close at 767.58, sitting right above its put wall at 767. Crucially, SPY remained above its gamma flip at 766.89 in long gamma territory. That positioning forced dealers to act as shock absorbers into the close, buying intraday weakness and preventing a wider breakdown beyond the session's priced expected move of 0.73%. QQQ followed a similar script, dropping to 740.96 against a put wall at 740. Because QQQ also stayed above its 737.34 flip, dealer hedging suppressed volatility rather than amplifying it, keeping the tape relatively cushioned despite sector-wide pressure. IWM told the opposite story. Closing at 281.97, the small-cap index remained pinned well below its 286.03 gamma flip in short gamma regime. In short gamma, dealer hedging accelerates market moves instead of dampening them, leaving price vulnerable to wider swings between its 280 put wall and 290 call wall into the final stretch. Heading into tomorrow's open, SPY sits right on the edge of its cushion. With spot at 767.58 and the flip sitting less than a point below at 766.89, any further downside tests whether long gamma buffers hold or if the market transitions into the faster-moving short gamma regime. QQQ carries a wider gap down to its 737.34 flip, while IWM remains in a regime where dealers press the direction of the tape. What traders do with these levels is their own call, but the dealer map marks where the liquidity changes.
