Strait of Hormuz Headline Lift Meets Overhead Resistance
Geopolitical headlines sent index futures higher, but dealer positioning across equity indexes puts strict structural limits on the rally.

The wires are running on geopolitical headlines this morning. Benzinga reported that US stock futures advanced following an offer from Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, giving equity markets an early bid. While macro headlines provide the initial pulse, my focus remains entirely on how dealer positioning absorbs the move.
Looking at the equity dealer book, SPY sits at 769.63, firmly inside a long gamma regime with its zero-gamma flip down at 763.61. In this setup, dealers act as market shock absorbers, buying dips and selling strength to keep the tape muted. The overhead ceiling is clearly defined by the call wall at 775, while the put wall sits at 760 against an expected move of 1.42 percent and a skew of 1.2.
QQQ reflects a similar structural constraint. Spot trades at 744.60, hovering just above its flip at 743.18. With dealers long gamma, upside momentum faces immediate resistance near the 746 call wall, while the 736 put wall establishes downside support within a 1.09 percent expected move and a skew of 1.5.
IWM presents the sole structural exception among the major indexes. Spot trades at 282.39, sitting just below its zero-gamma flip at 282.49. That places small caps in short gamma territory, where dealers hedge by pressing price moves rather than dampening them. This leaves IWM more vulnerable to intraday volatility between its 280 put wall and 287 call wall, carrying a 1.33 percent expected move and a negative skew of -0.3.
Headline optimism often sparks initial futures moves, but dealer positioning dictates the boundaries of the session. With SPY and QQQ anchored in long gamma and bounded by nearby call walls, dealer hedging behavior is set to buffer upside continuation despite the news cycle. What traders do with these structural levels is entirely their own click.
