Benzinga reported overnight that rising U.S. Treasury yields and surging crude oil prices weighed heavily on Asian risk assets, setting a cautious tone for global markets. WTI crude futures jumped 2.42% to $94.65 while front-month Nasdaq futures fell 0.84%, signaling broader macro pressure that spilled directly into crypto books ahead of the daily 08:00 UTC option expiry.
That external pressure hit the major crypto options books right at their structural boundaries. Bitcoin slid 1.97% over 24 hours to $82,800.59, pushing spot below its gamma flip at $84,010.66. Net GEX for BTC sits heavily negative at -7,301,551, sliding spot past max pain at $84,000. When spot sits below the flip in short dealer gamma, hedging mechanics change. Dealers shift from buying dips to selling into downward movement to stay delta-neutral, accelerating volatility rather than cushioning it.
Solana mirrored the break, down 4.58% to $118.16 against a gamma flip at $120.885. 24/7 Wall St. highlighted Solana's recent two-month rally of 68%, but the current positioning leaves SOL in negative GEX (-37,687) below its $122 max pain point. Ethereum also breached its threshold, dropping 2.36% to $2,643.00, below its flip at $2,681.89 and max pain of $2,675 with net GEX at -3,521,044. Benzinga noted analyst coverage calling this region Ethereum's final hurdle before a potential broader run, but current positioning shows dealers short gamma into the morning.
Not every major book broke lower. XRP fell 3.58% to $1.4758 as 24/7 Wall St. pointed out its 17% lag relative to BTC and SOL on the year. Despite the drop, XRP spot remains above its flip level of $1.0331 with max pain sitting at $1.50. Avalanche plunged 7.15% to $10.455, but its net GEX remains positive at 3,234 with spot holding above the $10.307 flip.
Outside the major options books, un-derivatized tokens showed isolated idiosyncratic flows, with QNT surging 50.5% to $263.69. Across the primary derivatized majors, however, the shift is structural: BTC, ETH, and SOL entered short gamma regimes simultaneously as macro headwinds crossed the wire.
