QQQ Gamma Flip at 769 Leaves Tech Book Short Below Spot

With QQQ trading at 737.72, spot sits well below its 769.06 gamma flip, leaving dealers positioned to accelerate downside market moves.

Tech equities are absorbing pressure today despite localized strength in select megacaps. MarketWatch reported that tech stocks are having a tough day despite a rally in Nvidia's stock following a buyback plan expansion. Meanwhile, TipRanks noted that Meta Platforms fell 4 percent and MongoDB plunged after CEO CJ Desai departed to lead Meta's new AI unit. On our tape, QQQ sits at 737.72, down 0.75 percent on front-month futures. While corporate headlines explain the catalyst, the dealer book shows why price action remains vulnerable to wider swings. Across all three major equity indexes, dealer positioning sits in short gamma territory. QQQ shows the widest structural gulf: spot at 737.72 is well below its gamma flip level at 769.06. When spot trades beneath the flip, dealers are short gamma, meaning their hedging mechanics require selling as price falls and buying as price rises. Instead of acting as a buffer, dealer flows amplify intraday movement. For QQQ, the downside anchor sits at the 730 put wall, while the upside call wall sits at 745. The expected move is currently priced at plus or minus 1.31 percent. SPY reflects a similar posture, with spot at 767.14 sitting below its gamma flip at 776.22, bounded by a 765 put wall and a 773 call wall. IWM rounds out the short gamma regime across indices, trading at 280.31 against a 286.50 flip level. When indices hold below their respective gamma flips, the market lacks the structural shock absorbers that suppress volatility during long runs higher. Until QQQ reclaims its 769.06 flip, dealer hedging keeps the tape susceptible to accelerated moves on light volume. What traders do with these structural levels remains their own choice.
