Index Dealers Open Tuesday Short Gamma Across the Board
SPY, QQQ, and IWM all enter the session below their gamma flips while headlines lean heavily on chipmaker debt deals and AI balance sheets.

The morning tape is digesting a fresh wave of artificial intelligence headlines, but the equity book enters Tuesday with dealers positioned to amplify rather than cushion price swings. Benzinga reports that Nvidia is turning to insurers to de-risk AI chip loans, while TipRanks notes Michael Burry shifted Micron and Nvidia short exposures into puts alongside reports of a hefty Anthropic loss. Premarket chatter also focused on semiconductor strength, yet the structural backdrop across US index options tells a more fragile story than standard morning optimism implies.
Every major index tracker sits below its respective zero-gamma line at the open. When dealers are short gamma, their natural hedging mechanics invert. Instead of dampening moves by selling into rips and buying dips, they are forced to sell falling markets and buy rising ones to stay flat. That dynamic typically expands realized intraday ranges until spot reclaims positive territory.
On SPY, spot is pinned at 766.37, trading right under the gamma flip at 767.25. The immediate battleground sits tight against the 768 call wall, while the downside boundary rests at the 761 put wall. Options markets are pricing an intraday expected move of plus or minus 1.49%, with skew reading 2.1. A push through 767.25 would flip dealer positioning back into stabilizing inventory, but failing to clear it leaves the tape vulnerable to sharp slippage toward 761 if macro or tech headlines trigger selling.
QQQ reflects an even wider disconnect. Spot prints at 738.5, positioned well beneath its gamma flip at 742.79. Its nearest overhead call wall sits at 745, while the put wall provides lower structural support down at 730, alongside an expected move of plus or minus 1.14%. Tech dealers will need a significant push to get back on the shock-absorbing side of the ledger.
IWM shows identical alignment. Spot at 280.44 hugs its 280 put wall, with the flip located overhead at 283.33 and the call wall up at 285. In crypto, Bitcoin trades at 84,297.50, resting comfortably above its flip at 83,812.04 with positive net GEX. Whether equity buyers step in to force dealers out of short gamma remains the open question, but the clicks remain entirely your own.
