RBA Hikes Cash Rate to 4.6% as Global Central Banks Diverge

Australia's central bank lifted its benchmark rate by 25 basis points to its highest level since 2011, defying easing cycles elsewhere.

The Reserve Bank of Australia raised its benchmark cash rate by 25 basis points to 4.6%, marking its highest policy rate level since 2011. Both Reuters and The Guardian reported the move, which signals stubborn inflationary pressures across Asia-Pacific economies and sets up a sharp policy divergence against peers that have already moved toward rate cuts. The decision broke through a broader international narrative of synchronized monetary easing. While central banks across Europe and North America have explored or initiated rate reductions, Australian policymakers opted to tighten financial conditions further to prevent consumer price expectations from de-anchoring. The move immediately ripples through regional debt markets, increasing corporate debt costs and tightening sovereign spreads across the Pacific Rim. Global sovereign yields were already on edge before the RBA's announcement. Bloomberg and The Wall Street Journal reported that U.S. government bond yields climbed to multi-month highs, with the 10-year yield printing at 5.26% on our tape and the 30-year yield touching levels unseen since 2002. Persistent geopolitical friction involving Iran has injected volatility across energy markets, complicating rate expectations ahead of key inflation data. That macro cross-current is hitting equity positioning directly. Small caps bear the brunt of higher real yields: on our tape, Russell futures shed 0.7% while Dow futures dropped 0.58%. In the equity options book, IWM remains trapped in short gamma below its 282.82 flip, sitting at 277.78 near its 275 put wall. SPY similarly trades below its 769.98 flip at 762.67, where dealers press intraday swings rather than cushion them. Only QQQ holds long gamma ground, hovering at 736.49 above its 734.16 flip. Whether other regional central banks follow Australia's hawkish pivot depends on upcoming core inflation prints. For now, the RBA has made clear that the global easing cycle is not universal, and higher-for-longer borrowing costs remain an active threat to risk assets.
