Robinhood Opens Nonstop Access While Tech Sits in Short Gamma
CNBC reported Robinhood's push into 24/7 trading and AI tools, but dealer books on tech show positioning is set up to accelerate swings rather than pad them.

CNBC reported that Robinhood is rolling out weekend hours and autonomous AI agents designed to let retail accounts trade around the clock. The retail narrative wants uninterrupted action, but my read of the dealer book shows the underlying market is already running without much of a shock absorber in tech.
While SPY sits comfortably in long gamma at 767.4 with its flip down at 761.31, QQQ is pinned in short gamma territory. Spot on QQQ trades at 741.55, parked directly beneath its gamma flip at 745.31 and its call wall at the exact same strike. In short gamma, dealers do not pad moves or buy the dips to keep the tape orderly. Instead, hedging mechanics require them to press moves in the direction of travel, selling into declines toward the 736 put wall and buying into rips. The expected move on QQQ is priced at plus or minus 1.3%, with skew printing at 2.4.
Small caps show the exact same imbalance. IWM trades at 280.6 against a flip up at 283.91, leaving dealers short gamma and leaning right on the 280 put wall with a call wall at 285. Between tech and small caps, the tape is set up for expanded volatility rather than passive containment. Offering round-the-clock entry into an environment where dealers are forced to chase momentum means market structure will punish bad fills faster than usual.
The around-the-clock trading Robinhood is targeting has always existed on the crypto desk, where structure looks noticeably calmer today. BTC sits at 85362.07 in positive net GEX above its 84184.70 flip, and ETH holds long gamma at 2735.73 over its 2704.39 flip. Unlike equity indices where QQQ and IWM dealers must chase momentum, major crypto options books currently sit in dampening regimes.
Providing continuous access to retail traders is a headline about distribution. The reality underneath the tape is that tech dealer inventory is positioned to widen intraday swings, not smooth them out. What you do with that tape is your click.
