EU Moves to Halve Chinese Hybrid Car Imports

Trade negotiators plan safeguard measures to cut Chinese hybrid vehicle imports by 50% while broad equity books diverge on dealer positioning.

The European Union plans to deploy safeguard measures to cut the volume of hybrid car imports from China by up to 50%, Bloomberg News reported, citing people familiar with the discussions. The Associated Press and Investing.com also reported that negotiators have finalized a preliminary trade framework aimed at defusing friction over electric vehicles and rare earth mineral supply chains, offering selective tariff relief to European exporters while capping Chinese imports into the single market. That trade friction lands across an equity tape operating under split regimes. While headline benchmarks closed higher on Friday—the S&P 500 up 0.6% and the Dow adding 423.31 points, according to the Associated Press—dealer hedging mechanics are fractured underneath. In our equity book, SPY sits at 778.57, positioned above its 776.23 gamma flip in positive gamma territory. With the call wall overhead at 780 and the put wall at 770, dealers act as a volatility buffer on broader index tape, dampening intraday swings. Tech presents the opposite structure. QQQ sits at 751.27, trading below its 751.99 gamma flip and leaving dealers short gamma between its 750 put wall and 755 call wall. In short gamma, dealer hedging amplifies directional moves rather than containing them, creating a wider reaction window to trade policy headlines. Small caps mirror the broader market's insulation, with IWM holding long gamma at 278.94 against its 278.30 flip. With benchmark 10-year Treasury yields at 5.24% and front-month Brent futures hovering at $104.72, trade barriers introduce fresh supply variables into an already elevated cost structure. In long gamma books like SPY, dealers absorb those ripples. Below the flip in QQQ, they press them.
