The cost of insuring French government debt against default jumped to a multiyear high this morning, with five-year sovereign credit default swaps climbing to 81 basis points according to S&P Global Market Intelligence data reported by Deltaone. MarketWatch reported that French sovereign bonds deteriorated further through the European morning, dragging European bank equities lower as France's 10-year yield pushed near 4.95%.
The sovereign credit stress lands in the middle of a wider macro bond rout. Reuters noted that US Treasury yields recently reached 5.34%, their highest mark since 2002, while our tape puts the 10-year yield at 5.24% after a slight retreat. When sovereign default protection spikes to multiyear extremes in core European sovereigns, the contagion channel rarely stays contained overseas. It drives immediate repricing across global duration, shifts dollar liquidity, and directly pressures equity valuation floors.
My dealer map shows the pressure splitting US equities into two distinct structural regimes right now. SPY trades at 767.24, sitting above its 766.08 gamma flip inside positive dealer gamma. In that territory, dealers act as shock absorbers, leaning against intraday moves between the 765 put wall and the 770 call wall. The expected move on the session sits at plus or minus 1.57%, with VIX printing 15.94.
Tech and small caps do not have that cushion. QQQ is pinned at 747.25, just under its 747.51 flip line in short gamma territory. With a 750 call wall overhead and a wide gap down to the 730 put wall, dealers on tech options are forced to press moves rather than buffer them. IWM is in an even steeper short gamma pocket at 280.49 against a 283.15 flip, pinned toward its 278 put wall. When sovereign debt strains shake peripheral risk, names sitting on the negative side of their zero-gamma line lack the structural support holding the broader benchmark together.
