QQQ Closes in Short Gamma Below 747.64 Flip

Tech closed underwater beneath its zero-gamma line at 743.57, leaving dealers positioned to amplify moves rather than cushion them into tomorrow.

The closing bell left tech isolated on the wrong side of the dealer map. While SPY managed to finish flat at 778.01 and preserve its long gamma posture above its 776.72 flip, QQQ slipped 0.33% to close at 743.57. That puts the Nasdaq proxy firmly underneath its 747.64 gamma flip, pinning it into short gamma territory right above its 742 put wall. When price sits below the flip, dealers transition from shock absorbers into momentum accelerators, selling dips and buying rips to keep their books delta-neutral. That divergence defined the afternoon tape. Across the broader index, SPY spent the final stretch glued between its 774 put wall and 781 call wall, keeping the daily range well inside its plus or minus 0.78% expected move. VIX barely budged, ticking up 0.39% to 15.27, reflecting an orderly tape in the large caps. Yet QQQ showed real friction. Its skew prints at an elevated 2.5 compared to SPY's 0.8, showing protective put demand skewing the curve as spot tested down toward that 742 floor. QQQ's plus or minus 1.31% expected move reflects that widening distribution. Small caps fared no better on the close. IWM dropped 0.43% to settle at 276.7, landing directly against its 276 put wall. It managed to preserve a long gamma read by holding above its 276.32 flip by a matter of cents, but the compression between the flip and the put strike leaves virtually no buffer. The 280 call wall remains distant overhead. Beyond equities, the crypto majors mirrored tech's positioning friction. BTC trades at 83,104.85, sitting below its 83,610.71 flip with net GEX negative at -17.17 million. ETH similarly hovers at 2,503.87 beneath its 2,505.29 flip, keeping crypto dealer desks positioned to chase rather than buffer spot moves. Into tomorrow's open, QQQ's setup commands attention. With the index closing beneath 747.64, dealers enter the morning unhedged against downside continuation toward the 742 put wall. If buyers fail to reclaim the flip early, the tape remains vulnerable to dealer-driven acceleration, while SPY's long gamma insulation keeps the broader market's leash tight.
