The US Treasury has levied a fine exceeding $1 billion on Bank of America following extensive investigations into money laundering and sanctions violations. According to the Financial Times, regulators concluded the banking giant failed to adequately report over $5 billion in suspicious transactions, with wire reports placing the formal penalty at $1.2 billion.
The enforcement action underscores intensifying supervisory scrutiny across the US financial sector, arriving just as global watchdogs escalate reviews into broader operational and systemic risks across balance sheets. While bank penalties are an established feature of the regulatory landscape, a ten-figure settlement signals severe compliance deficiencies that land directly on tier-one institution overhead.
On the tape, broader equity benchmarks showed modest weakness into the close. SPY finished the session down 0.01% at 778.00, while front-month Dow futures slipped 0.34% to 51,932. Across my desk, the dealer positioning across broad indices remains split. In SPY, spot trades at 778.28, holding above the 776.69 gamma flip inside a long gamma regime. In that zone between the 774 put wall and the 781 call wall, dealers act as counter-trend shock absorbers, buying weakness and selling strength. In contrast, QQQ remains vulnerable in short gamma, with spot at 743.89 sitting well beneath its 749.98 flip line.
For financial heavyweights facing regulatory headwinds, headline penalties test institutional liquidity, but broad tape stability continues to run through index gamma walls. What you do with this read remains your own click.
